Detroit
I could mark one of my early awoken steps with Requiem for Detroit? when Julien Temple arrived in town, he was shocked by what he found. Admitted alarm bells.
Temple found, an irrepressible positivity in the city. Unable to buy fresh food for their children, people are now growing their own, turning the demolished neighbourhood blocks into urban farms and kick-starting what is now the fastest-growing movement across the US.
I told everyone I could about this, prophetic shoots amongst the clouds and thunder that I was beginning to more clearly see and hear. I don’t pipe up so loudly now but somehow out the cracking landscape must find any and all good.
Stuff that’s oblivious to the struggle isn’t much cop, not unless it’s humane to the uttermost.
So what’s happening in Detroit?
Farming still legal and recovery continues and the upside of the downside with resurants growing out the gardens.
The downside of the... the schools are falling apart. I haven’t looked further but assume teachers having to cautiously weigh(ing) whether to have more sick-outs, is symptomatic of workers rights and union power (if at all).
I don’t feel like posting but one to make the effort. I mulled over the photo and gimped it up. The picture above, a sign of the times. A movie set. The mail yap, this is the amazing abandoned house. One of the “amazing” 40,000 derelect properties.
These pictures should have us weeping and - for those who do - praying. Get us angry, compassionate, want to act, dig some kind of defiant garden. Stop this rot. And build.
